American Pie Presents: The Book of Love (sometimes known as American Pie and the Book of Love) is the seventh installment in the American Pie franchise, and the fourth in the American Pie Presents: franchise, starring Louisa Lytton, John Patrick Jordan, Kevin M. Horton and Brandon Hardesty and directed by John Putch. It has been reported that this particular sequel will return to the original feel of the first three films. Several sources, including writer David H. Steinberg and actors Brandon Hardesty and Eugene Levy have praised the film. It was released in Italy on December 2nd, 2009, and will be released on December 22nd, 2009 in US.

Premise

The story takes place at East Great Falls High, ten years after the First American Pie movie. The new protagonists of this movie are three brand new hapless virgins: Rob (Bug Hall), Nathan (Kevin M. Horton) and Lube (Brandon Hardesty). One night Rob accidentally sets fire to the school library, and finds the Bible, Mr. Levenstein's (Eugene Levy) creation. Unfortunately for them, the book is ruined. The book had incomplete advice, and embarks them on a helpless but hilarious journey to lose their virginity. After trying and failing for most of time, they pledge to restore the book, and to do this, they must find the original author of the book (Levenstein) and all the other people who wrote on the book, and start the restoration.

Out of all the seven movies this the worse one.

Plot

The film begins in Metro City, a small city that floats above Earth, which is now covered in what's left of Soylent Green's dystopian portayal of 2022. Toby Tenma finishes a physics pop quiz ahead of all his classmates and is free to leave, so he rewires Orrin (the family servant robot) who takes Toby to the Ministry of Science.

Toby's father, Dr. Tenma, is at the ministry, meeting with President Stone and Dr. Elefun. They have captured two cores of The Fifth Element, a "positive" (good) core and a "negative" (evil) core. Toby is placed in a room where he is supposed to stay until the end of the demonstration, but he escapes and runs off to the demonstration room.

President Stone orders the Red Core to be placed into a robot called "The Peacekeeper" to power it. The Peacekeeper begins to malfunction and tries to attack the scientists, vaporizing Toby before the adults are able to deactivate the robot.

Soon after, Dr. Tenma is seen holding blueprints of a robot replica of Toby, in hopes of recreating his son. He takes hair from Toby's hat to access all his memories and place them in the robot. Dr. Elefun provides the Blue Core to power the very advanced Toby robot. The robot Toby comes to life, to the excitement of Dr. Tenma. Tenma then takes Toby home, at first excited to spend time with his son, but he quickly realizes the new Toby is not the same as the old Toby.

Dr. Tenma calls Dr. Elefun, fearing that he may have made a mistake. Dr. Elefun makes a point that Toby cannot be exactly duplicated. Dr. Tenma grieves over the fact that whenever he sees Toby, he is reminded that Toby is really gone and will never come back.

While in his room, Toby worries about his father, since he has never been that angry with him before. While Toby gets into a quarrel with cleaning robots outside his window, he discovers he can understand them but falls out the window only to discover that he can fly.

President Stone discovers Toby's energy signature and his blue core, and orders his troops to capture it. When Toby returns home he overhears his father talking with Elefun about deactivating Toby. Dr. Tenma reveals that Toby is only just a copy of the original Toby and that he no longer wants him since his face only reminds him of his real son and the pain of losing him. Devastated, Toby flies off but not before Elefun assures him that he has a place somewhere in the world.

Toby is ambushed by military drones and flying craft controlled by Stone's military. A barrage of missiles temporarily disables Toby, causing him to fall to the Earth's surface. Toby wakes up on the Earth's surface, covered in broken robots and the remains of what appear to be the events portayed in John Christopher's The Death Of Grass, where he meets a robot dog named Trashcan. Trashcan leads Toby to a trap where he is wrapped up and captured by a group of kids, but released when he appears to be a human. Toby is then abducted by the "Robot Liberation Front", who name him "Astro". They then warn him of Hamegg, who enslaves robots. Cora and the children break in to free Astro.

Tenma promises to President Stone that he will deactivate Astro when they capture him and give Stone the blue core for the Peacekeeper. Cora takes Astro to their home, filled with tons of children and the Fagin-like ringmaster Hamegg. However, Hamegg isn't as evil as he seems. Hamegg eagerly welcomes Astro into their family. Later that night, Hamegg talks with Astro and how he used to work in Metro City with Dr. Tenma, but was thrown away due to his "intimidating brilliance".

The next day while out searching for parts in Brazil, Trashcan tried to tell everyone else that Astro is a robot, but fails. (Trashcan eventually writes on the ground "He's A Robot" but then Zane comments "Makes me wish I knew how to read.") Astro finds a 100 year old robot named Zog. Using the power of his blue core, Astro revives Zog. They take him back to their home and fix him up for the robot games. But Astro is slightly upset when he discovers that it is a fight to the death. Before the games start, Hamegg electrifies Astro and reveals to everyone that he is a robot. So, Hamegg puts him in the games. At Yankee Stadium, Astro easily clears all the robots but is put up against Zog, who refuses to fight Astro. Hamegg, forcibly tries to get Astro to fight, but Zog attacks him (being over 100 years old, the rules of robots not being allowed to harm humans doesn't apply to him, since it has been the rule for 50 years). Astro then stops Zog, leaving Hamegg to wonder what kind of robot he really is. Just then the military arrives and Zog tries to defend Astro, but Astro stops Zog and goes with the military. Astro believes he needs he must fulfill his destiny, whatever it is.

Stone mockingly offers the captive Astro a "drink" of machine oil.

Astro is taken back to the lab he was made in and Dr. Elefun tells him that he is wonderful and none of this is his fault, but Astro believes that it is hard to fit in and that perhaps this is his destiny. Dr. Tenma takes out the blue core and apologizes to Astro, who says he shouldn't be sorry and apologizes for not being a better Toby. Astro then deactivates and dies. Dr. Tenma gives Stone the core, but repents of the evil he is doing and takes the core back, putting it in Astro. Astro wakes up wondering why Dr. Tenma has done that, but he replies that even though Astro is not Toby, he is still his son.

Astro escapes so Stone uses the red core to reactivate the Peacekeeper. The Peacekeeper absorbs Stone and heads to destroy Astro, with Stone's mind controlling it. With the Peacekeeper on the rampage, absorbing every weapon and structure it comes across, Astro flies into the city to protect it from the rampaging behemoth. Meanwhile, Cora and the others hijack Hamegg's car to head to Metro City and help Astro. In the resulting showdown, the city's power source is destroyed but Astro manages to hold it up and causing it to land unharmed before continuing battle with the Peacekeeper. He's captured by the Peacekeeper but when it tries to absorb him, it doesn't work. Dr. Tenma tells Astro that if the Blue Core and Red Core come together, Astro and the Peacekeeper will die. Knowing that the Peacekeeper must be stopped, even if it means sacrificing himself, Astro flies into the Peacekeeper's Red Core, resulting in a massive explosion that completely destroys the Peacekeeper, leaving Stone unharmed but arrested, and Astro dying since the blue core was drained in the explosion. However, because Zog was revived with the blue core, he is able to return some of the energy back to Astro, reactivating him.

Astro finds his place as a hero and everyone rejoices. Cora reunites with her parents. But before any celebrating can happen a large alien attacks the city and Astro, now at peace with his robotic nature and his destiny as a hero, immediately launches into action after reassuring his concerned father, "I was made ready!" The movie ends with Astro flying to fight the alien.

Production

In 1999, Sony Pictures Entertainment purchased the film rights to Astro Boy from Tezuka Productions, intending to produce a combination live-action/animatronics/CGI feature film alongside Jim Henson Productions originally slated for a Christmas 2000 release, with Eric Leighton (Dinosaur) attached to direct.[citation needed] Nothing more came out of this announcement.

In June 2004, Leighton was replaced with animator Genndy Tartakovsky with a scheduled 2007 release.[citation needed] However, Tartakovsky later left the project to produce the Dark Crystal sequel, The Power of the Dark Crystal, also for Jim Henson Productions.

In summer 2006, it was announced[citation needed] that Hong Kong-based animation firm Imagi Animation Studios would produce a CGI animated Astro Boy film as part of a three-picture distribution deal with Warner Bros. and The Weinstein Company, alongside TMNT, and Gatchaman. In 2007, Colin Brady signed on to direct the movie.[citation needed] In 2008, Summit Entertainment took over the film's distribution rights. That same year, Brady was replaced with David Bowers.

Music

The score to Astro Boy was composed by John Ottman, who recorded his score with a 95-piece orchestra and choir at the world-famous Abbey Road Studios.[12] A soundtrack album was released on October 20, 2009 by Varese Sarabande Records.

Marketing

On November 5, 2008, D3Publisher of America announced it will published a video game based on the film. The games are scheduled to be released for console and handheld systems in the fourth quarter of 2009 to coincide with the film's theatrical release.[13] Astro Boy: The Video Game for Wii, PlayStation 2 system and PSP system is under development by High Voltage Software and Nintendo DS by Art Co. Ltd.[14]

Beginning in May, 2009 and continuing thru Sept., 2009, IDW Publishing published a "prequel" and comic book adaptation of the movie as both mini-series and in graphic novel format to coincide with the North American release of the movie in Oct., 2009.

On May 29, 2009, a trailer for the film was released with the Disney-Pixar movie Up.

Model of Astro Boy waiting to be powered up in Hong Kong.

A model of a motionless Astro Boy waiting to be powered up was set up at Peak Tower, Hong Kong, outside Madame Tussauds Hong Kong in September 2009.

This film is rated PG by the Motion Picture Association of America.

A panel of the movie was held at the San Diego Comic-Con on July 23, 2009.

Design issue

While designing the characters for the film, Imagi Animation Studios wanted to change the design of Astro Boy’s face to look more grown-up because they thought his original face was too childish. Tezuka Productions, however, wanted no changes. Eventually, a compromise was reached, and Astro's face was altered to look just slightly more adult.[15][16]

Reception

As of October 23, the film has received mixed or average reviews. The film currently holds a 47% 'Rotten' rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 81 reviews with an average score of 5.6/10.[17] Another review aggretator, Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating from 100 top reviews from mainstream critics, gave the film an average score of 53% based on 22 reviews.[18]

Most critics complained about the film having "a political agenda that may rankle some viewers", but nevertheless, "enough visual thrills to please its target demographic."[17] However, Owen Gleiberman of Entertainment Weekly gave the film a B and wrote of the film having "little too much lost-boys-and-girls mopiness," but "Astro Boy is a marvelously designed piece of cartoon kinetics..."[19] Glenn Whipp of the Los Angeles Times gave the mixed review claiming "The kids won't get it but will enjoy the big, climactic robot rumpuses, which owe a heavy debt to Brad Bird's The Iron Giant.[20]

The film failed to make a splash in Japan, appearing at the bottom of the opening week's top 10 rankings and making only $328,457. Conversely, the film was very successful in China, breaking a box-office record for a CG animated movie. This follows the same pattern as Dragonball Evolution and Speed Racer, other American-produced films based on Japanese sources which failed to garner success in their land of origin, but sold well in China.[21]

The film in the US opened at #6, grossing $6.7 million, overall, the film has grossed over $18 million, making the film a box office failure thus far.

[edit] Plot

The book is about two children, Henry and his sister, who listen to their grandfather tell the story of the town of Chewandswallow, where the weather comes three times a day, at breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and is always food and beverages. The rain is juice and soup, the snow is mashed potatoes, and the wind brings hamburgers. Because of this phenomenon, there are no grocery stores. However, when floods and storms of giant food come, the population is forced to leave Chewandswallow on boats made of bread, and adapt to their new lives in our world where the sky doesn't feed you.

[edit] Film adaptation

On September 18, 2009, Sony Pictures Animation released a film adaptation of the book. On August 15, 2006, Sony announced that it would produce the movie, which tells the origins of Chewandswallow's weather.[2]. On June 13, 2008, MTV reported that Andy Samberg and Anna Faris would star in the film.[3] On September 18, 2008, Variety announced that Bill Hader and Anna Faris had signed on to voice the two lead characters. Hader voices Flint Lockwood, "a young inventor who dreams of creating something that will improve everyone's life." Faris provides the voice for Sam Sparks, "a weathergirl covering the phenomenon who hides her intelligence behind a perky exterior." James Caan, Bruce Campbell, Mr. T, Andy Samberg, Neil Patrick Harris, Bobb'e J. Thompson, Benjamin Bratt, Al Roker, Lauren Graham, and Will Forte are also on the voice cast.[4] Co-writers and co-directors Philip Lord and Chris Miller said that it would be an homage to, and a parody of, disaster movies such as Twister, Armageddon, and The Day After Tomorrow.[5]

Plot

Two astronauts, Bower (Foster) and Payton (Quaid), wake up from suspended animation to find themselves alone, with no memory of who they are, what they are doing, or what has happened to the crew of their 60,000 passenger sleeper ship the Elysium. They are unable to access the ship's bridge, and cannot communicate with any other members of the crew, including the flight team they are to relieve.[5] While exploring the spacecraft under Payton's radio guidance, Bower talks with Payton about Pandorum, a psychological condition brought on by extended periods of hyper-sleep (suspended animation) and its symptoms and effects, including severe paranoia, vivid hallucinations, and homicidal tendencies.

As Bower explores on, he encounters dead bodies, and fast-moving humanoid creatures. Escaping from one of them, he then encounters other human survivors, and they work together to reach the ship's nuclear reactor. The reactor will fail permanently if Bower does not reset it soon. Moving on, the group encounters another survivor, who tells them the story of what had happened before they awakened. Their mission is revealed to be one of desperation. Earth, suffering from massive overpopulation, dispatched the sleeper ship and its crew on a 123-year voyage to a new, Earth-like planet called Tanis to create a settlement. When the ship receives one last message from Earth, informing them that Earth was no more and that they were the last survivors, one of the three crew members (as there are usually three flight crew active at any one shift) turned insane, killed his other two crew mates, then played God by awakening most of the crew and doing what he pleased with them. When he grew bored of it, he went back into suspended animation and left the rest of the crew wakened. Genetic augments that every crew member had received prior to the mission (for quick adaptation to the new planet) had instead adapted them to the ship, turning them into the cannibalistic monsters that Bower and the other survivors have been encountering. This survivor then knocks them out with gas. Upon awakening, they find themselves chained up, with the survivor about to kill them for food.

Meanwhile, Payton discovers another crew member, Gallo, who reveals to him that he was part of the flight crew that received the message from Earth. After receiving the Earth's last message, Gallo gives a different account from what Bower has heard, that the other two crew mates with Gallo had an onset of Pandorum and, eventually, Gallo was forced to kill them in order to survive. By now, most of the ship's population is either dead or mutated.

Bower manages to convince the survivor to allow them to restart the ship reactor. The group fights their way to the ship's reactor, and Bower eventually restarts it. While moving through the passenger hypersleep storage area, he sees the pod for Payton's wife, and his memories now allow him to realize that Payton is not who he says he is. Payton is actually Gallo, and the "Gallo" that the audience has been seeing, is actually just the other part of "Payton's" consciousness, and the man who has been calling himself Payton is in fact the aged Gallo, who was the one to succumb to Pandorum and kill his other two crew mates. Bower then fights with Payton/Gallo while simultaneously battling the symptoms of Pandorum, and during this he inadvertently causes a hull breach. The ship at this point is revealed to have actually been under water for a long time now, having landed on the Earth-like planet of Tanis, their original destination. The ship's log shows the mission has been ongoing for 923 years. Water then starts pouring in, killing Payton/Gallo.

Bower escapes with the last known survivor by ejecting his hypersleep pod from the ship. The hull breach causes the ship's computer to initiate an emergency evacuation, ejecting the remaining 1,211 crew members still hibernating and unmutated onto the new world Tanis, with its beautiful scenery and two moons in its sky, that is to be the new home for humanity--or whatever it's going to mutate into.

Production

Pandorum was announced in May 2008 with Dennis Quaid and Ben Foster in lead roles. Christian Alvart was attached to direct the film, based on a script by Travis Milloy. The film was financed by Constantin Film through a joint venture deal with subsidiary Impact Pictures.[6] The partnership helped fund the US$40 million production, as Constantin drew subsidies from Germany's Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg (MBB) regional film fund, the German Federal Film Board (FFA), and the German Federal Film Fund (DFFF). The German Federal Film Fund provided US$6 million to the production, the fund's second-largest 2008 payout, after US$7.5 million for Ninja Assassin.[7][8] Filming took place at Babelsberg Studios in Potsdam in August 2008.[6][7]

Release

Ben Foster, Cung Le, and Antje Traue talk about Pandorum at a panel discussion at WonderCon 2009.

Summit Entertainment is handling foreign sales and presented Pandorum to buyers at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival.[6] Overture Films will distribute Pandorum in North America, Icon in the United Kingdom and Australia, Svensk in Scandinavia, and Movie Eye in Japan. The film is set up as a possible franchise, so if it performs strongly, Impact Pictures will greenlight sequels.[7]

The DVD and Blu-Ray release is on January 19th in the United States[9] over Anchor Bay Entertainment.[10]

Reception

The film received generally negative reviews from critics. Review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes reports the film as holding a 28% approval rating.[11] The site's general consensus is that "while it might prove somewhat satisfying for devout sci-fi fans, Pandorum's bloated, derivative plot ultimately leaves it drifting in space".[11] At Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, the film holds a "generally unfavorable" score of 28 based on 13 reviews.[12] Science fiction magazine SFX was more positive, stating that "Pandorum is the finest interstellar horror in years", and awarding the film 4 stars out of 5.[13] Film Ireland also gave Pandorum a positive review, appreciating the film's synergy of cinematic techniques, set design, and developed characters.[14] Audience reaction was mostly positive at website Box Office Mojo; their polls report that on a scale of A+ to F, the average grade cinemagoers gave the film was B+.[3]

The film opened number 6 at the box office with $4,424,126. As of November 16, 2009, the film has grossed $13,323,798.[3]

Gamer is a 2009 science fiction thriller film written and directed by Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor. The film stars Gerard Butler as an unwilling participant in an online game in which participants can control human beings as players. Gamer was released in North America and the United Kingdom on September 16, 2009. The film is rated R for strong violence, sexual content, nudity and language.

Plot

In 2034, mind-control technology has taken society by storm. Ken Castle (Michael C. Hall) has revolutionized the gaming industry with his invention of self-replicating nanites. The nanites colonize in the brain, gradually taking over the existing brain cells and allowing full control of all motor functions by a third party. The first off-shoot of this technology was Society, an online community in which gamers pay to control a real person in a pseudo community, much like current simulated worlds such as Second Life. Those who work as characters in Society are paid for their participation, unlike Castle's latest creation, Slayers. A multiplayer, first-person shooter game, Slayers allows gamers to control death row prisoners in mass-scale death matches. Any inmate who lives through 30 matches wins his freedom. Simon, a 17-year old trust fund baby (Logan Lerman), controls Kable (Gerard Butler), the online champion of the game, having won 27 matches and lived through them all. Slayers and Society are hugely popular, making Castle the richest man in America within a matter of weeks. However, Castle's organization is the target of a activist group called Humanz, who claim the nanite technology has a more ominous purpose. When a virus hacks into the video mainstreams broadcasting a message from the elusive rebel group, Simon is offered the chance to communicate with Kable while in-game, which is not allowed. After a stranger gives Kable a warning that the game's mastermind plans to kill him, Kable asks Simon to relinquish control and uses the opportunity to escape.

Kable is taken to the rebels' leader (Ludacris) who explains that the mind control technology used on Kable and the other Slayers can potentially be used without discretion on anyone, leading to the extinction of independent thought. He also gives Kable directions to where he can break his wife out of Society, where she has been working as a character since his incarceration. Kable arrives, and, after a brief shootout with security, manages to escape with his wife. While the rebels attempt to deactivate the cells from his wife's mind that make the mind control possible, Kable is taken into another room. The leader reveals that Kable was once a soldier, working on a future cellular control project. His friend was the first to receive the cell transplant. However, Castle decided to discover the true limits of the mind control and force Kable to kill his friend, leading to his conviction for first-degree murder and subsequent death row sentence.

Some four years later, the game Slayers came out, with Kable as one of the leading stars. Kable is then informed that his daughter has been placed with a foster family...Castle himself. Kable infiltrates Castles' mansion, but is confronted by Castle who is singing and dancing to music, all the while forcing other death row inmates to dance along with him. After a brief fight between Kable and the inmates, Castle leads him into a room with a large basketball court. Castle reveals that he also received the transplant, however, the cellular structure in him allows him to control anyone else who has the cells. This is proven when, having obtained a knife, Kable attempts to kill Castle only to find himself frozen still. Castle then savagely beats Kable and brings in his wife and daughter. Meanwhile, rebel members manage to broadcast their confrontation all over the world.

Kable is forced to crawl to his family, and Castle then attempts to force him to kill his own daughter. After a brief struggle of wills, Kable manages to move the knife away. Simon then returns in control of Kable and, using his controller software that he uses to control Kable in-game, Kable tricks Castle into using his controlling cells to stab himself in the stomach. After Castle dies, Kable requests for Castles' employees, who have been watching, to release the family from their control. They do this, and, with the words "Well played, Kable", depart. The movie then ends with Kable driving through a tunnel in Glacier National Park with his daughter and wife in the car.[2]

Production

In May 2007, Lakeshore Entertainment re-teamed with Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor, the creators of Crank (2006), to produce a "high-concept futuristic thriller" called Game. Neveldine and Taylor wrote the script for Game and were slated to direct the film, while actor Gerard Butler was cast into the lead role.[4]

Production took place in Albuquerque, New Mexico for a 53-day shoot. Filming was at the Albuquerque Studios and on location around Albuquerque. Multistory sets were built on parking lots in downtown Albuquerque to depict buildings that were blown up in the film, and other sets were built on the backlots near the studios.[5] The crew used special hand-held Red One digital cameras, which allowed the special effects team to begin work normally done in post-production after each day's shooting.[6]

In March 2009, the film's working title was changed from "Game" to "Citizen Game".[7][8] In May 2009 another name change was announced, the new name being "Gamer".[9][10][11]

Inspirations

The film begins with some sequences from the 1992 experimental documentary Baraka.

Reception

Critic reception has been primarily negative. The website Dread Central awarded Gamer four out of five, saying "Gamer is a top of the line action/terror trip with more exploding carcasses than the latest installment of Rambo."[12] The Film Stage gave the film a score of 8/10, calling it "a look at the dangers of a media-infested world, of nonstop advertisement and of the future of youth in a world with ever expanding interactive technology".[13] The New York Daily News, however, disagrees; the reviewer marked the film off with one star out of five, calling it a "Xerox of a Xerox" and citing a number of films it takes elements from, including The Matrix and Rollerball.[14] RVA Magazine reasoned that Gamer's plot is overly similar to The Condemned and commented that Gamer "hates its primary audience" and "tries to criticize the commercialization of violence, even though it itself is commercialized violence".[15] IGN gave the film a 4/10, calling it "a frustrating film". The film currently holds a 29% "Rotten" rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with the consensus "With all of the hyperkinetic action and none of the flair of Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor's earlier work, Gamer has little replay value."

Box office

Gamer opened with $3.3 million on its opening day, ranking at #4 at the box office. In total, the film earned $9,156,057 on its first weekend. Overall the film closed at the box office on October 8, 2009 so its total came up with $20,534,907 in the domestic box office and another $8,517,547 in foreign box offices making a worldwide total of $29,052,454.

Fighting is a 2009 action film directed by Dito Montiel, written by Robert Munic and Dito Montiel, and starring Channing Tatum, Terrence Howard, Luis Guzmán, Brian J. White, Flaco Navaja and Strikeforce Middleweight Champion Cung Le. It was released on April 24, 2009 in the United States by Rogue Pictures.

Plot

New York City, the present. Shawn MacArthur (Channing Tatum) is a street hustler, one day when selling counterfeit DVDs and books at the corner of Radio City Music Hall he is set upon by some youths. The youths work for Harvey Boarden (Terrence Howard), a ticket scalper who controls the corner. Shawn fights off three youths but doesn't get his money or products back.

Later Shawn sees Harvey and the youth who stole his money in a cafe and he confronts them. Harvey gives him his money back and offers him a chance to a 'winner takes all' fight for money. Harvey sets up a meeting with his friend and rival, Martinez (Luis Guzman).

Shawn's first fight is at a church in Brooklyn against a Russian. He wins when he knocks the Russian into a water fountain. Harvey takes Shawn to a club where he meets a waitress named Zulay (Zulay Henao), a single mother to whom Shawn had earlier tried to sell a Chinese fake Harry Potter book.

In the VIP area to the club Shawn also meets Evan Hailey (Brian White), a professional fighter who used to be on the same college team as Shawn, and was coached by Shawn's Dad. Shawn and Harvey leave after Evan and Shawn nearly get into a fight.

Shawn's second fight is at the back of a store in the Bronx, against a much larger opponent. The fight descends into chaos after interference from some of Harvey's crew and the woman who owns the store pulls out a gun for the destruction of her store. Harvey, Shawn and the rest of Harvey's crew flee the scene and neither fighter gets paid. For his third fight Shawn and the crew go to an Asian owned penthouse. Shawn wins the third fight.

Between fights Shawn meets Zulay a few times, before they eventually consummate their relationship. Shawn and Zulay are visited by Harvey and Shawn leaves in disgust, suspecting Zulay and Harvey of having a sexual relationship. Harvey explains that Zulay places bets for him.

Shawn and Harvey are offered a fight against Evan, and Shawn accepts, but Harvey wants him to throw the fight so that Martinez and his associates can make money. Shawn agrees to throw the fight. Zulay places the bets, a total of $500,000.

Shawn and Evan fight, with Zulay, Harvey and the rest of the crew watching. Evan has Shawn in a chokehold and Shawn is about to throw the fight when he decides to fight back and overpowers Evan. Shawn beats Evan and Martinez threatens Harvey.

At Harvey's apartment Shawn reveals Zulay reversed the bets and they have one million dollars. Zulay picks up Shawn and Harvey and they leave New York with Zulay's daughter and grandmother.

2012 is a 2009 science fiction disaster film based loosely on the 2012 phenomenon and directed by Roland Emmerich. The film stars John Cusack, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Amanda Peet, Oliver Platt, Danny Glover, Thandie Newton, and Woody Harrelson. The film was distributed by Columbia Pictures. Filming began in August 2008 in Vancouver.

The film briefly references Mayanism, the Mesoamerican Long Count calendar, and the 2012 phenomenon in its portrayal of cataclysmic events unfolding in the year 2012. Due to solar flare bombardment the Earth's core begins heating up at an unprecedented rate. This results in a series of Doomsday event scenarios plunging the world into chaos, such as California falling into the Pacific Ocean, the eruption of the Yellowstone National Park caldera, shifting of the continents by crustal displacement, Megatsunami impacts along every coast line on the Earth, and the flooding of the entire planet. The film centers around an ensemble cast of characters as they narrowly escape multiple catastrophes in an effort to reach ships in the Himalayas, along with scientists and governments of the world who are attempting to save as many lives as they can before the disasters ensue.

Reviews of the film have been mixed, with several critics pointing out the improbability of some of the Apocalyptic scenarios depicted in the film. The film also utilized a viral marketing campaign that has fallen under much criticism with the fictional organization Institute for Human Continuity, a fictitious book written by Jackson Curtis entitled Farewell Atlantis, and streaming media, blog updates and radio broadcasts from the apocalyptic zealot Charlie Frost at his website entitled This Is The End.

Plot

In 2009, American geologist Adrian Helmsley travels to India to meet his friend Satnam, who has discovered that neutrinos from a massive solar flare are acting as microwaves and causing the temperature of the Earth's core to increase rapidly. Adrian informs White House Chief of Staff Carl Anheuser and US President Thomas Wilson that this will instigate a chain of events that will bring about the end of the world. At the G8 summit in 2010, other heads of state and heads of government are made aware of the situation. They collaborate to begin a secret project intended to ensure the continuity of human life, strategically choosing 400,000 people for admission on a series of gigantic ships to be constructed in the Himalayas. To help fund the venture, additional individuals are allowed to purchase tickets for one billion euros apiece.

In 2012, Jackson Curtis is a writer in Los Angeles who works part-time as a limousine driver for wealthy Russian businessman Yuri Karpov. Jackson's ex-wife Kate and their children Noah and Lily live with her new boyfriend, plastic surgeon and amateur pilot Gordon Silberman. Jackson takes Noah and Lily on a camping trip to Yellowstone National Park, where they meet Charlie Frost, a conspiracy theorist living as a hermit and hosting his own radio show live from the park. Charlie supports a theory that suggests the Mayans predicted the world would come to an end in 2012, and claims he has knowledge of the secret "space ship" project and possesses a map of the ships' location. The family returns home as cracks begin to develop along the San Andreas Fault in California and earthquakes occur in the San Francisco Bay area. Jackson grows suspicious and rents a private plane to rescue his family. He collects his family and Gordon when the Earth's crust displacement begins and they escape Los Angeles as it collapses into the Pacific Ocean.

As millions begin dying in apocalyptic earthquakes worldwide, the group flies to Yellowstone to retrieve Charlie's map. The group narrowly escapes as the Yellowstone Caldera erupts. Charlie, who stayed behind to make a live broadcast of the eruption, is killed by the blast. Realizing the ships are in China, the group lands in Las Vegas, where they meet Yuri, his twin sons, girlfriend Tamara, and pilot Sasha. They join the group and secure an Antonov An-225 to head across the Pacific. Also bound for the ships aboard Air Force One are Anheuser, Adrian, and First Daughter Laura Wilson. President Wilson chose to remain in Washington D.C., and is soon killed by a tsunami that sends the USS John F. Kennedy crashing into the White House. With the Vice President dead and the Speaker of the House missing, Anheuser appoints himself acting US President.

Upon arriving in China in a crash-landing that kills Sasha, Yuri and his two sons are taken to the ships, stranding the Curtis family, Gordon, and Tamara, all of whom do not possess tickets. Jackson and the group witness helicopters carrying multiple animals to the ships' location which Jackson later reconciles as "arks". After leaving the crash site the abandoned group is picked up by Nima, a Buddhist monk. Together, they begin sneaking onto an ark through its hydraulics chamber with the help of Nima's brother Tenzin, a welder for the ark project. In his last moments, Satnam calls Adrian to inform him that a tsunami is engulfing India and heading towards the arks. Learning of this, Anheuser orders the arks be sealed, trapping thousands outside. Adrian manages to convince the other G8 leaders to let the remaining people on board. As the ark's tailgate is lowered and raised, Yuri falls to his death getting his two sons on in time, and both Gordon and a large electrical power drill fall in between the gears. Gordon is killed, and the lodged drill prevents the gate from closing, rendering the ship unable to start its engines. The tsunami arrives and begins to flood the ark, drowning Tamara and setting the ark helplessly adrift. Jackson and Noah work together to free the drill and its cable from the closing mechanism. The gate closes and the crew regains control of the ark, preventing a fatal collision with Mount Everest.

When the floodwater from the worldwide tsunamis eventually recedes, satellite data shows that Africa rose in relation to sea level, and its Drakensberg mountains are now the highest on the planet. As three arks set sail for the Cape of Good Hope, Jackson reconciles with his family, and Adrian starts a relationship with Laura. The movie ends with a view of the Earth revealing a geographically different African continent.

Director Roland Emmerich and composer-producer Harald Kloser co-wrote a spec script titled 2012, which was marketed to major studios in February 2008. Nearly all studios met with Emmerich and his representatives to hear the director's budget projection and story plans, a process that the director had previously gone through with the films Independence Day (1996) and The Day After Tomorrow (2004).[8] Later that month, Sony Pictures Entertainment won the rights for the spec script, planning to distribute it under Columbia Pictures.[9] The studio planned to make the film for less than the estimated budget.[10] The film was eventually made with a production budget of $200m[3][4] – $260m.[5][6]

Filming was originally scheduled to begin in Los Angeles, California, in July 2008,[11] but instead commenced in Vancouver in August 2008 and concluded in January 2009.[12] Due to the possible 2008 Screen Actors Guild strike, filmmakers set up a contingency plan for salvaging the film.[13] Uncharted Territory, Digital Domain, Double Negative, Scanline, Sony Pictures Imageworks and others were hired to create visual effects for 2012.[14] Thomas Wander co-wrote the score with Harald Kloser.

Although the film depicts the destruction of several major cultural and historical icons around the world, Emmerich stated that the Kaaba was also considered for selection. Kloser had reservations over including Mecca, saying he did not want a fatwā issued against him.[15]

Soundtrack

The original score for the film was composed by Harald Kloser and Thomas Wander. Singer Adam Lambert from American Idol contributed a song for the film called "Time for Miracles" and expressed his gratitude for the opportunity in an interview with MTV.[23] The film's soundtracks consist of 24 tracks, which also includes the song "Fades Like a Photograph" by Filter and another song called "It's Not The End of The World", written by Kloser and Wander.[24]

Marketing

On November 12, 2008, the new studio released the first teaser trailer for 2012 that showed a tsunami surging over the Himalayas and interlaced a purportedly scientific message suggesting that the world would end in 2012, and that the world's governments were not preparing its population for the event. The trailer ended with a message to viewers to "find out the truth" by searching "2012" on search engines. The Guardian criticized the marketing effectiveness as "deeply flawed" and associated it with "websites that make even more spurious claims about 2012".[25]

The studio also launched a viral marketing website operated by the fictional Institute for Human Continuity, where filmgoers could register for a lottery number to be part of a small population that would be rescued from the global destruction.[26] David Morrison of NASA has received over 1000 inquiries from people who thought the website was genuine and has condemned it, saying "I've even had cases of teenagers writing to me saying they are contemplating suicide because they don't want to see the world end. I think when you lie on the internet and scare children in order to make a buck, that is ethically wrong."[27] Another viral marketing website promotes Farewell Atlantis, a fictional suspense novel by the film's lead protagonist, about the events of 2012.[28]
Comcast had also organized a "roadblock campaign" to promote the film, where a two-minute scene from the film was broadcast across 450 American commercial television networks, local English and Spanish language stations, and 89 cable outlets within a 10-minute window between 10:50 PM EDT/PDT and 11:00 PM EDT/PDT on October 1, 2009.[29] The scene featured the destruction of Los Angeles and ended with a cliffhanger, with the entire 5-minute-38-second clip made available on Comcast's Fancast web site. The trade newspaper Variety estimated that, "The stunt will put the footage in front of 90% of all households watching ad-supported TV, or nearly 110 million viewers. When combined with online and mobile streams, that could increase to more than 140 million".[29] Sony also plans on replicating this promotion in other regions.[29]

Release

2012 was originally scheduled to be released on July 10, 2009. The release date was changed to November 2009 to move out of the busy summer schedule into a time frame that the studio considered to have more potential for financial success. According to the studio, the film could have been completed for the summer release date, but the date change will give more time to the production.[30] The film was released on November 11, 2009.[2][31] It was released on Friday November 13, 2009 in Sweden, Canada and the United States, and will be released on November 21, 2009 in Japan.[1] It was given a wide release in India on November 13, 2009. In Malaysia, the film was released on Thursday November 12, 2009. In the United Kingdom, two theaters had a screening time of 8:12pm (20:12 on a 24 hour clock) to coincide with the film's title.[32]

Reception

Box office

2012 opened at number one with an estimated $65 million on its first weekend. So far, the film has come to total $81.7 million domestically and $160 million in foreign markets, totaling $235 million worldwide.[33]

Reviews

Upon release the film has received mostly negative reviews from critics. Rotten Tomatoes reports that 37% of critics gave the film a positive review, based upon a sample of 195 reviews, with an average score of 5 out of 10.[34] Critics cited numerous scientific inaccuracies, lazy script and heavy reliance on the CG visuals, while some praised the CG effects. On its "top critics" section, it fared even worse with 25% of critics giving it a positive review, based on 11 reviews, with an average score of 4.6/10.[35] On Metacritic, the film has a score of 49 out of 100, based upon a sample of 34 reviews.[36]

Peter Travers of Rolling Stone criticized the film by comparing it to Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen: "Beware 2012, which works the dubious miracle of almost matching Transformers 2 for sheer, cynical, mind-numbing, time-wasting, money-draining, soul-sucking stupidity."[37]

Roger Ebert was enthusiastic about the film, giving it 3.5 stars out of 4, saying it "delivers what it promises, and since no sentient being will buy a ticket expecting anything else, it will be, for its audiences, one of the most satisfactory films of the year."[38] Both Ebert and Claudia Puig of USA Today called the film the "mother of all disaster movies".[38][39]

In China, one commentator praised the film's "rich Chinese elements and scenes," saying they were "well received by local movie buffs."[40]

Television spin-off

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Emmerich confirmed that a television series based upon the film is in the works. The series will serve as a sequel to the film and is planned to focus on a group of survivors in 2013.[41]

Public Enemies is a 2009 American crime film co-written and directed by Michael Mann. Set during the Great Depression, it focuses on the true story of FBI agent Melvin Purvis's attempt to stop criminals John Dillinger, Baby Face Nelson, and Pretty Boy Floyd. The film is an adaptation of Bryan Burrough's non-fiction book Public Enemies: America's Greatest Crime Wave and the Birth of the FBI, 1933–34. Christian Bale plays FBI agent Purvis, Johnny Depp plays Dillinger, Marion Cotillard plays Dillinger's girlfriend Billie Frechette, Stephen Graham plays Nelson, and Channing Tatum plays Floyd.

Plot

The film opens in 1933 as John Dillinger (Johnny Depp) is brought to the Indiana State Prison by his partner John "Red" Hamilton (Jason Clarke), under the disguise of a prisoner drop. Dillinger and Hamilton overpower several guards and free members of their gang including Charles Makley (Christian Stolte) and Harry Pierpont (David Wenham). The jailbreak goes off without a hitch, until gang member Ed Shouse (Michael Vieau) beats a guard to death. A shootout ensues as the gang makes its getaway. Dillinger's friend and mentor Walter Dietrich (James Russo) is killed, and a furious Dillinger kicks Shouse out of the car. The rest of the gang retreats to a farm house hideout, where crooked East Chicago, Indiana cop Martin Zarkovich (John Michael Bolger) convinces them to hide out in Chicago, where they can be sheltered by the local Mafia.

In East Liverpool, Ohio, Melvin Purvis (Christian Bale) and several other FBI agents and East Liverpool Cops are running down Pretty Boy Floyd (Channing Tatum). Purvis kills Floyd and is promoted by J. Edgar Hoover (Billy Crudup), who is struggling to expand his Bureau into a national police agency, to lead the hunt for John Dillinger, declaring the first national "War on Crime."

In between a series of bank robberies, including a violent one at the First National Bank in East Chicago, Indiana, where Dillinger kills an East Chicago cop, Dillinger meets Billie Frechette (Marion Cotillard), his love interest, at a restaurant, and proceeds to woo her by buying her a fur coat. Frechette falls for Dillinger even after he tells her who he is, and the two quickly become inseparable.

Melvin Purvis leads a failed ambush at a hotel where he believes Dillinger is staying. An agent is shot and killed by the occupant. After the man escapes, Purvis realizes the killer wasn't Dillinger but Baby Face Nelson (Stephen Graham). After this incident, Purvis requests Hoover to bring in a professional lawmen who know how to catch criminals dead or alive, including Texas "cowboy" Charles Winstead (Stephen Lang).

Police finally find Dillinger and arrest him and his gang in Tucson. Purvis arrives that evening and briefly talks with Dillinger; Dillinger tries to size Purvis up and manages to unnerve him with his talk about the agent killed by Nelson. Dillinger is extradited back to the Lake County Jail in Crown Point, Indiana, where he is locked up by Sherriff Lillian Holley (Lili Taylor) pending trial. Dillinger and a few inmates, chief among them is Herbert Youngblood (played by Michael Bentt), carve a fake wooden gun and use it to escape the jail in Sherriff Holley's Police Cruiser. Dillinger is unable to see Frechette, who is under tight surveillance. Dillinger learns that Frank Nitti's (Bill Camp) Chicago Outfit associates are now unwilling to help him; Dillinger's crimes are motivating the U.S. government to begin prosecuting interstate crime, which imperils Nitti's lucrative bookmaking racket.

Later, Dillinger meets fellow bank robber Tommy Carroll (Spencer Garrett) in a movie theater; with him is Ed Shouse, who wants to rejoin the gang. Carroll goads Dillinger into a bank robbery job in Sioux Falls, promising a huge score. Even though Baby Face Nelson is involved, whom he doesn't like, Dillinger agrees. A shootout (triggered by Nelson shooting a cop outside the bank) occurs in which Dillinger is shot in the arm, and Carroll is shot and left for dead. They retreat to Nelson's wilderness hideout in Manitowish Waters, Wisconsin, where Dillinger's wounds are treated; the gang is disappointed to find that their haul is only a fraction of what they expected. Dillinger expresses hope he can free the rest of his gang still in prison, including Pierpont and Makley, but Red convinces him this is unlikely to happen.

Purvis and his men apprehend Carroll (who is still alive) and torture him to find the rest of the gang's location. They arrive at Little Bohemia and Purvis organizes another failed ambush, in which several civilians are killed in the cross-fire. Dillinger and Red escape separately from Nelson and the rest of the gang. Agents Winstead and Hurt (Don Frye) pursue Dillinger and Hamilton through the woods on foot, engaging them in a running gun battle in which Red is shot and fatally wounded. Trying to escape along the road, Nelson, Shouse and Homer Van Meter (Stephen Dorff) hijack an FBI car, killing several agents in the process, including Purvis's partner Carter Baum (Rory Cochrane). After a car chase, Purvis and his men kill Nelson and the rest of the gang. Further down the road, Dillinger and Hamilton steal a farmer's car and make good their escape; Hamilton dies later that night and Dillinger buries his body, covering it in lye.

Dillinger manages to meet Frechette, telling her he plans to do one last job that will pay enough for them to escape together. However, Dillinger drops her off at a hotel he thinks is safe and helplessly watches as she is captured by the FBI while sobbing. An interrogator, the brutish Agent Harold Reinecke (Adam Mucci) viciously beats Frechette to learn Dillinger's whereabouts, but she refuses to talk, instead sneering that they missed their chance to capture him at the hotel, and that Dillinger's anger will know no bounds when he hears about her treatment; Purvis and Winstead arrive and angrily break up the abusive interrogation. Meanwhile, Dillinger is meeting with Alvin Karpis (Giovanni Ribisi), who tries to recruit a disinterested Dillinger in a train robbery with his associates, the Barker Gang. After hearing about the massive reward, Dillinger agrees to pull the robbery and flee the country the next day. Dillinger receives a note from Billie through his lawyer, Louis Piquet (Peter Gerety), telling him not to try and break her out of jail.

Through crooked cop Zarkovich, Purvis enlists the help of a madam and Dillinger acquaintance Anna Sage (Branka Katic), threatening her with deportation if she does not cooperate. She agrees to set up Dillinger, who is hiding with Sage.

That night Dillinger and Sage see a Clark Gable movie called Manhattan Melodrama at the Biograph Theater. When the movie is over, Dillinger and the women leave as Purvis moves in. Dillinger spots the police (specifically Reinecke, the man who beat up Dillinger's gal) and is shot several times before he can draw his gun against the cop who harmed Frechette. Agent Winstead, who fired the fatal shot, listens to Dillinger's last words. Purvis departs to inform Hoover that Dillinger is dead.

Later, Winstead meets Frechette in prison. He tells her that Dillinger's dying words were "Tell Billie for me, 'Bye bye Blackbird.'" The closing text reveals that Melvin Purvis quit the FBI shortly afterwards and died by his own hand in 1960, and that Billie lived out of the rest of her life in Wisconsin following her release in 1936.

Cotillard at the film's Paris premiere

Public Enemies is based on Bryan Burrough's 2004 non-fiction book, Public Enemies: America's Greatest Crime Wave and the Birth of the FBI, 1933–34. Burrough had originally begun researching the subject with the aim of creating a miniseries. The idea was accepted by HBO and Burrough was made an executive producer, along with Robert De Niro's Tribeca Productions, and was asked to write the screenplay.[9] However, Burrough had no experience in screenwriting, and says his drafts were probably "very, very bad. Ishtar bad." He began simultaneously writing a non-fiction book, which he found easier, spending two years working on it while the interest in the miniseries disappeared.[9] Burrough's book was set to be published in the summer of 2004 and he asked HBO to return the movie rights. They agreed and after the book was released, the rights were re-sold to production companies representing Michael Mann and Leonardo DiCaprio, the latter of whom was interested in playing John Dillinger. Burrough met with a representative and then heard nothing for three years.[9] The actor eventually left the project to appear in Martin Scorsese's Shutter Island.[10]

In 2007, Mann renewed interest in the project with Universal Pictures backing it. He wrote the screenplay with Ronan Bennett and Ann Biderman and also directed.[3] Of the screenplay, Burrough has said "it's not 100 percent historically accurate. But it's by far the closest thing to fact Hollywood has attempted, and for that I am both excited and quietly relieved."[11]

Filming

Principal photography began in Columbus, Wisconsin on March 17, 2008[12] and continued in Chicago, Illinois; Joliet, Illinois; Lockport, Illinois; Oshkosh, Wisconsin; Beaver Dam, Wisconsin; Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Madison, Wisconsin; and several other places in Wisconsin until the end of June 2008, including the Little Bohemia Lodge in Manitowish Waters, Wisconsin, the actual location of a 1934 gun fight between Dillinger and the FBI.[13] Some parts of the film were shot in Crown Point, Indiana, the town where Dillinger was imprisoned and subsequently escaped from jail. The actual 1932 Studebaker used by Dillinger during a robbery in Greencastle, Indiana was also used during filming in Columbus, borrowed from the nearby Historic Auto Attractions museum.[14]

The decision to shoot parts of the film in Wisconsin came about because of the number of high quality historic buildings. Mann, who had been a student at University of Wisconsin–Madison,[15] scouted locations in Baraboo and Columbus as well as looking at 1930s-era cars from collectors in the Madison area.[16] In addition, the film was shot on actual historical sites, including the Little Bohemia Lodge, and the old Lake County jail in Crown Point, Indiana, where Dillinger staged his most famous escape where legend has it he fooled jail guards with a wooden gun[17] and escaped in the sheriff's car.[11] Scenes were shot at places that he frequented in Oshkosh. The courthouse in Darlington is the location for the courthouse scenes. A bank robbery scene was shot inside the Milwaukee County Historical Society, a former bank in Milwaukee that still has much of the original period architecture.[18]

In late March 2008 portions of the film were shot at Libertyville High School. Footage includes one of the school's science labs, an office, the school's front entrance, and the locker rooms.

In April 2008 the production filmed in Oshkosh.[19] Filming occurred downtown and at Pioneer Airport, including scenes shot using a historic Ford Trimotor airliner owned by the Experimental Aircraft Association.[20] Later that month, filming started at the Little Bohemia Lodge. In April and May 2008, film crews shot on the grounds of Ishnala, a historic restaurant in the Wisconsin Dells area.

The film became a flash point in the public debate about the "film tax credits" [21] which are offered by many states. According to a study by Wisconsin's Department of Commerce, the state of Wisconsin gave NBC Universal $4.6 million in tax credits, while the film company spent just $5 million in Wisconsin during filming.

Michael Mann, the director, decided to shoot the movie in HD format instead of using the traditional 35 mm film.[22]

Post-production

Music

Mann also brought composer Elliot Goldenthal on board to score the film; Goldenthal also scored Mann's 1995 film Heat to critical acclaim.[23] Jazz musician Diana Krall also makes a cameo appearance singing the ballad "Bye Bye Blackbird," while Dillinger and his new love interest Billie Frechette share their first dance. A duduk is also featured in the movie.

Font

Mann commissioned graphic designer Neville Brody to create a new font which would be used in the film's title sequence and associated publicity material.[24] Brody had previously worked with Mann on the titles for Heat and The Insider.[25] Brody created a font he called New Deal. His brief was to create something which evoked the Depression era the film is set in.[24] Mann initially suggested using the London Underground typeface Johnston as a reference.[25] Brody and his team took inspiration from Soviet Constructivist styles, the New Deal program and in particular the publicity material of the WPA as a basis for the font.[25] The final design was selected and refined from more than 300 options.[25] According to Brody the font is "solid, clearly masculine and immovable."[24]

Rating

In the United States Public Enemies has received an MPAA rating of R for gangster violence and some language.[26]. In the United Kingdom, the film received a 15 certificate from the BBFC with consumer advice "Contains Strong Violence."[27] In Germany, Public Enemies only received an FSK 12 rating.

Reception

Depp at the film's Paris, France premiere

The film received fairly positive reviews from critics. As of August 9, 2009, the film holds a 67% "Certified Fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes, out of 230 reviews, with an average rating of 6.4/10.[28] It currently holds a 70/100 from Metacritic, which indicates "generally favorable reviews."[29] Rob James from Total Film gave the film 4/4 stars, stating: "This superstar crime thriller emerges as something surprising, fascinating and technically dazzling."[30] Most critics also praised the film's performances, specifically Depp as Dillinger. Roger Ebert, who gave it a 3.5/4 stars, claimed that "This Johnny Depp performance is something else. For once an actor playing a gangster does not seem to base his performance on movies he has seen. He starts cold. He plays Dillinger as a fact."[31] Billy Crudup's performance was also praised, with his performance being described as "disarmingly good" by Variety's Todd McCarthy[32]. Critics also gave praise to the film's cinematography and set pieces. Manohla Dargis of The New York Times stated that "Michael Mann's "Public Enemies" is a grave and beautiful work of art. Shot in high-definition digital by a filmmaker who's helping change the way movies look, it revisits with meticulous detail and convulsions of violence a short, frantic period in the life and bank-robbing times of John Dillinger."[33] Peter Travers of Rolling Stone magazine, who gave the film 3.5/4 stars, said "It's movie dynamite." Ross Miller of Movie World gave the film 4.5/5 stars, and called the film, "a competent, compelling accomplishment that rings true and feels real from start to finish."

Some critics, however, disliked the film. Critic Liam Lacey claimed that the film was missing "any image of the economic misery that made Dillinger a folk hero" while also stating that "the most regrettable crime here is the way that Mann, trying to do too much, robs himself of a great opportunity."[34] Similarly, Richard Corliss of TIME magazine claimed that the film's emphasis on docudrama allowed for "precious little dramatic juice".[35]

Historical inaccuracies

Although the film has been praised for its attention to period detail and general accuracy, it takes significant creative license with known facts:

Though Dillinger's robbery spree after his release from Michigan City Prison financed the bribery necessary to get the guns into Michigan City Prison, Dillinger was not present during the prison break; he was still in jail himself in Lima, Ohio at the time. Also, no one was killed in the Michigan City break, but Sheriff Jesse Sarber was killed in the jailbreak at Lima.

Dillinger died (July 22, 1934) before both Pretty Boy Floyd (October 22, 1934) and Baby Face Nelson (November 27, 1934). Other gang members and associates depicted being killed in the film, including Walter Dietrich, Ed Shouse, and Homer Van Meter, also outlived Dillinger.

It's unknown if Purvis actually shot Floyd, though he was armed only with a Colt M1911 pistol and not a Mauser rifle as depicted in the film. Contrary to the film's portrayal, Purvis, four other FBI Agents and several East Liverpool policemen, armed with a variety of weapons (pistols, shotguns, rifles and at least one Tommy gun), fired several volleys at Floyd en masse, hitting him at least twice; because of this, who exactly shot Floyd may be unknowable. The exact circumstances of Floyd's death are still a matter of controversy, with East Liverpool policeman Chester Smith alledging one of Purvis's men summarily executed Floyd after he had been wounded, while FBI Agents present denied this allegation, claiming he was fatally injured and died from his initial injuries. It may also be noted that Floyd was gunned down in an open field, not in an orchard as the film portrays, and was not armed with a Tommy gun but only a .45 pistol at the time.

The hearing with Hoover and Senator Kenneth McKellar of Tennessee actually took place several years after the events depicted in the film.

Hoover had already declared a "war on crime" before Dillinger came to national attention; the July 17th, 1933 Kansas City Massacre of four FBI Agents and police officers, in which Pretty Boy Floyd was allegedly involved, was the trigger for the "war", along with the kidnappings of St. Paul brewery heir William Hamm by the Barker-Karpis Gang (which is referenced in the film) and oil tycoon Edward Urschell by George "Machine Gun" Kelly.

Homer Van Meter and Harry Pierpont are shown taking part in several bank robberies together, when in reality the two men hated each other and never worked together on a robbery.

The film shows Purvis calling in the Texas "cowboys" after a (fictional) failed ambush of Nelson, over the objections of a reluctant Hoover. In reality, Winstead and his men only arrived in Chicago after Little Bohemia and at Hoover's instigation; Hoover considered Purvis incompetent and would later clash with him over the attention Purvis received for the killings of Dillinger and Floyd.

Similarly, Purvis was no longer officially in charge of the Dillinger investigation by the time of Little Bohemia; Special Agent Sam Cowley had succeeded him at Hoover's orders. Cowley is only a minor character in the film and is killed by Nelson at Little Bohemia.

The gang had been staying at Little Bohemia for several days when Purvis and his men arrived; in the film they're depicted as stopping there overnight after a robbery.

The Little Bohemia ambush was a major fiasco, unlike the film's portrayal where all of Dillinger's associates are killed. Dillinger and his men slipped out the back after the FBI fired shots on CCC workers leaving the lodge; Nelson was the only gang member to actually exchange shots with Purvis's men, and none of the gangsters were killed.

Tommy Carroll (shown as getting wounded and captured after the Sioux Falls robbery in the film) was with Dillinger at Little Bohemia and was killed two months later; Ed Shouse, shown as being present (and killed) at Little Bohemia, was in prison at the time.

Purvis did not shoot Nelson and was not present when he was killed. Nelson died in a shootout at Barrington, Illinois with Agents Hollis and Cowley, who both died from Nelson's bullets.

Alvin Karpis never met Dillinger (although he knew Nelson fairly well, and his partners Doc Barker and Volney Davis helped bury Hamilton) and did not ask him to join the Barker-Karpis gang on any jobs.

Billie was actually arrested before Little Bohemia, not after as depicted in the film, though otherwise the scene is very accurate.

Anna Sage, Dillinger's betrayer, did not know Dillinger for over a year before and was not a good friend as depicted.

Polly Hamilton, the girl he goes to the movies with in the final scene of the film, was actually Dillinger's lover, while the film shows Billie Frechette as his only love interest.

Dillinger did not enter the offices of the Dillinger Squad, but rather another state police department.

[edit] Release

A preview of Public Enemies was seen at the end of the 81st Academy Awards, with the first trailer being released shortly after on March 5, 2009. Public Enemies had its world premiere in Chicago on June 19, 2009,[36] and was released in Los Angeles on June 23, 2009.[citation needed] The film was given wide release in the United States on July 1. Public enemies is scheduled to be released on DVD and Blu-Ray in the U.S. on 8 December 2009.

Imagine That is a 2009 comedy-drama film starring Eddie Murphy, Thomas Haden Church, Nicole Ari Parker, Martin Sheen, and Yara Shahidi. Imagine That takes place in Denver, Colorado, notable because of the skyline and landmarks. It centers on the relationship between a workaholic father Eddie Murphy, and his daughter Yara Shahidi, whose imaginary world becomes the solution to her father's success. Among the cast is veteran actor Ronny Cox who last starred with Eddie Murphy in his blockbuster series, Beverly Hills Cop.[3]

Plot

A financial executive, Evan Danielson (Eddie Murphy) can't stop his career downspiral. However, it turns out that his young daughter, with the help of her magical blanket and her imaginary friends, is capable of predicting which stocks are good investments. Meanwhile, his scheming co-worker Johnny Whitefeather (Thomas Haden Church) tries to figure out Evan's secret to his newly found success.

Olivia (Yara Shahidi) is a girl who we think has divorced parents and spends most time living with her mother (Nicole Ari Parker), rarely with her father. Her father, Evan (Eddie Murphy) is a workaholic father and doesn't know anything about her daughter, ignoring her, and telling her to stop talking to her "magic" blanket so called "Goo-Gaa". Evan works at a company that he has been at for 8 and a half years and has a competitor, Johnny Whitefeather (Thomas Haden Church). On a day Evan has a conference, he has to bring Olivia since he cannot leave her alone at home. While Evan is just warming up, he cannot find his work papers for the conference. He soon finds out that Olivia drew picturs and cut patterns on his work papers and gets angry. Johnny steals the spotlight so Evan gets even angrier and makes up stories about the other companies relating to what Olivia did to the papers. Evan coincidentally said everything about the story true. And gets a raise. He asks Olivia how she knew everything and said she asked Goo-Gaa.

Music

The score to Imagine That was composed by Mark Mancina, who had previously worked with director Karey Kirkpatrick on Over the Hedge. He recorded his score with an 83-piece ensemble of the Hollywood Studio Symphony at the Sony Scoring Stage.[4]

Home Video release

Imagine That was released on DVD and Blu-ray on October 13, 2009. [5]

Reception

The film is a co-production between Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies. Because Hotel for Dogs was released by DreamWorks instead of Paramount, Paramount reunited with Nickelodeon to co-produce the film.

The film received mixed reviews from critics. [6] Rotten Tomatoes reported that 38% of critics gave positive reviews based on 73 reviews with an average score of 5.1/10. [7] Another review aggregator, Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 top reviews from mainstream critics, the film has received an average of 53% based on 22 reviews. [6]

On its opening weekend, the film opened #6 grossing $5,503,519 in 3,008 theaters with an $1,830 average. [8] As of August 9 2009, the film has grossed $16,135,104 worldwide. [2] This opened similar to Eddie Murphy's last summer movie Meet Dave which also opened poorly its opening week.

Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love is a 1996 Indian drama film directed by Mira Nair. The film takes its title from the ancient Indian text, the Kama Sutra, but this only serves as a common link between the characters. During filming in India, the name of the project was not revealed to government officials who would have denied the petition to film in India had it been called "Kama Sutra." Instead, it was called "Maya & Tara." Since government officials made many periodic visits to the set to ensure proper Indian film etiquette — as is true with all films made in India — the cast had to improvise fake scenes which avoided the nudity and sexuality central to the story. Upon completion, authorities screened the film and it was subsequently banned in India because of the erotic scenes that contained heterosexual as well as homosexual elements (the lesbianism was depicted in an explicit scene, whereas the male homosexuality was more implied).

Plot

Set in 16th century India, the movie depicts the story of two girls, Maya and Tara, who were raised together even though they come from different social classes. Tara (Sarita Choudhury) is an upper-caste princess while Maya (Indira Varma) is her beautiful servant. The two girls are best of friends and have been treated the same, until they get old enough for marriage. At this point Tara is treated as a future princess being readied to marry Prince Raj Singh (Naveen Andrews) but Maya is forced into the role of her servant, which culminates into an argument where Tara reminds Maya of her lowly position in life. Being resentful of the inferiority she is made to feel, Maya exacts her revenge by sleeping with Prince Raj on the wedding night. Prince Raj himself is delighted with the opportunity since he is an opium smoking playboy who loves sex, drinks, and nearly naked gladiator type fights. When Maya's actions are discovered by Tara's brother Bikram aka Biki (who has been dreaming to make Maya his Queen since the time she was just a kid), he develops an intense amount of lust for her. When she refuses him, he brands her as a whore, and she is banished from the palace.

Maya is forced to wander around on her own. She eventually meets many free-spirited people, including an older sensuous woman named Rasa Devi (Rekha) who is a teacher of the Kama Sutra, the ancient art of seduction that takes into account dancing, singing, costumes, as well as the art of making love. While a student there, Maya also meets a young stone sculptor named Jai Kumar (Ramon Tikaram) and the two begin a romantic relationship until one day Raj, now the king, shows up wanting to commission some statues for his pleasure. He immediately recognizes that some of the statues look just like the only woman he now desires, the outcast Maya, setting up a gladiator type contest between the two men. What culminates is an intensely homoerotic 'friendly' competition in which the two, nearly naked, grapple and dance in a male-bonding wrestling match without the intention of hurting each other. Even so, Kumar wisely allows King Raj to beat him and in doing so he receives many favors and gold, but he loses the right to see Maya. On top of that, King Raj is descending deeper into debauchery and opium delirium with no interest or inclination of bedding his own Queen, even for the sake of procreation. However, the blame for the lack of an heir is not placed on the King. Instead, it is Queen Tara who is scorned for not being able to seduce her own husband.

Jai Kumar finds it difficult to tolerate it anymore that his love of life has to be a sex toy for someone else. He asks her for marriage. Kumar and King Raj have another gladiator contest where they fight each other with violent tools just for the sake of the hatred they have for each other due to Maya. Kumar hurts the King badly and has to be ceased by one of the King's men from hurting him any further. After the fight the King learns that Kumar has been meeting Maya from time to time and making love with her, which results into the King sentencing Kumar to imprisonment and then being crushed under the feet of the Royal Elephant. Maya tries her best to make the King free Kumar saying that she'll anything and everything for that. But King eventually demands that he wants her heart and not just her body, which she says he'll get only after he frees Kumar. But the King denies asserting that if Kumar's life is spared Maya will see his face again because she loves him.

Maya finally realizes that she must make difficult choices as she finds herself in the position to either accept her role as concubine to King Raj or to help the people she loves who are all headed down towards their own paths of destruction, all because of her presence in their lives. She tells Tara that she loves Jai Kumar and not the King when she finds that she has attempted to commit suicide. Maya trains her to seduce the King. But when Tara goes to her husband, she begins to seduce him but then tells him that he is common to every other woman and that he does not deserve to be loved by anyone. Here the King has Kumar killed under the feet of an elephant. And after Kumar is executed, Maya leaves the Kingdom as a widow of Jai Kumar.
